Buy Kalamata olive oil 5 litre canister

Our extra virgin Kalamata olive oil with protected designation of origin is also available for connoisseurs and gourmets in a 5 litre canister.
The Kalamata olive oil in a handy 5 litre canister offers numerous advantages:

  1. Cost efficiency: Buying Kalamata olive oil in a 5 litre canister gives you a better €/litre price. 1 litre Kalamata olive oil bottle €22.90/ litre versus 5 litre Kalamata olive oil canister for €18.19/ litre
  2. Long-lasting enjoyment: With 5 litres, you have enough olive oil for many culinary adventures, be it for cooking, frying or as a dressing.
  3. Freshness and quality: The tinplate canister protects the olive oil from light and air, which preserves the freshness and quality of the oil. Our tip: Transfer olive oil for everyday use into bottles. And store the canister closed, dry, cool and protected from light.
  4. Environmentally friendly: The larger containers reduce the need for smaller packaging, which is more environmentally friendly.

Our Kalamata olive oil has the protected designation of origin (PDO), which stands for Protected Designation of Origin and means that the olive oil is pressed only from olives from the Kalamata region including parts of Messinia (see below for more details ↓). The quality of an olive oil depends on many factors. The location, the care, the climate, the soil and the olive variety are decisive quality factors. All these factors must harmonise in order to obtain an excellent olive oil. Kalamata olive oil is the product of a harmonious interplay of these factors, such as climate (many hours of sunshine, sufficient rain), soil (mineral-rich) and olive variety (Koroneiki). But that's not all. Expert care and gentle harvesting are the recipe for success. The cold-pressed (<27°C) olive oil is made from 100% Koroneiki olives and is versatile in the kitchen (not just as a salad dressing). Olive oil is an essential part of Mediterranean cuisine and is used for cooking, baking, roasting and seasoning.

Olive oil Kalamata PDO Messinia Union

We source the Greek extra virgin olive oil Kalamata PDO (in English PGI or PDO) in a 5-litre canister directly from Konstantopoulos S.A. in Greece, a family business founded in the 1950s. The olive oil is also known as Messinia Union - Kalamata PDO. Messinia Union is one of the most well-known and traditional brands of extra virgin olive oil on the Greek market. Messinia Union (Agricultural Cooperatives Union of Messinia) was formed from the union of the historic agricultural cooperatives of Messinia (Messinia Union). The cooperative is active in the areas of quality control, product marketing and supporting olive farmers with expertise and technology.

Where does Kalamata olive oil PDO come from?

The port city of Kalamata is the economic and cultural centre of the region of Messenia. The city and region are known for the tasty Kalamata olives and the excellent olive oil. However, Kalamata olive oil P.D.O., or protected designation of origin, does not only come from Kalamata or the olive groves in the immediate vicinity. Since 2015, the area of Kalamata olive oil PDO/g.U. has included the whole of Messinia. Why? The application by the ‘Messinia Union’ cooperative to expand the area was approved because the olive oils produced in the Messinia region have the same organoleptic and chemical properties as those produced in the Kalamata region. At the same time, however, the guidelines and criteria for designation as PDO/g.U./g.g.I. have been tightened.
