The indigenous Assyrtiko grape variety is the undisputed goddess of Greek white wine varieties. Yet it is extremely exciting. Some people find the white grape variety reminiscent of Riesling. Assyrtiko is used to make high-quality, long-lasting wines with strong acidity, which go particularly well with the country's typical cuisine.
The grape variety originally comes from the Aegean island of Santorini. It is now widespread throughout Greece.
The Demeter Assyrtiko white wine AGIA TRIADA PGI Kavala 2022 is produced by Apostolidi. The winery is located around 35 minutes by car to the east of the picturesque harbour town of Kavala in northern Greece. The Demeter vineyards are located on the Gulf of Thasos and on the shores of the Thracian Sea. The Assyrtiko grows at an altitude of around 80-120 metres in a closed basin with sandy coral soils of limestone. This AGIA TRIADA site is ideal for growing this indigenous white wine variety.
The Apostolidi family business is now in its second generation and is run by Efthymis Apostolidis. Efthymis studied oenology in Germany, where he also gained important experience with top producers such as Aldinger (a multi-award-winning winery from Fellbach). After his return, he and his sister Vasiliki took over the family's organic winery. With a great willingness to innovate, the siblings managed the transformation from organic to biodynamic cultivation and have been creating top wines with their own signature style ever since. One of Apostolidi's wines is the Agiorgitiko SOL ROUGE. An excellent Greek top red wine.
