How much does a good Italian wine cost?

The question of how much a good Italian wine costs is a matter of opinion. The question is rather how much you are prepared to spend on a wine, because there is no upper limit. But of course there is a rule of thumb: from 5-7 euros you can buy good (also organic) wine from Italy. High-quality wine refers not only to the flavour, but also to the quality of production. For us, a good Italian wine is characterised by clean production, careful cultivation of the vineyards, optimal harvest times, gentle processing and pressing as well as strict production and quality controls. For some, 5 to 7 euros may seem too little. But good wine does not have to be expensive. There are many inexpensive wines from Italy that impress with their excellent quality and flavour. These wines often come from lesser-known but quality-conscious winegrowers and regions. On the other hand, there are wines from renowned regions such as Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino or Amarone della Valpolicella that fetch high prices. These prices are often due to the reputation of the region, the tradition and, above all, the limited production quantities. However, a high price is not always a guarantee of better flavour or higher quality. Awards from Mundus Vini BIOFACH, or points (for example Falstaff) can help when choosing a good wine.

How many quality levels does Italian wine have?

Wine is a cultural asset in Italy and is inextricably linked to the country. With a production of around 47.5 million hectolitres (2019), Italy produces around 20% of the world's wine. The first official wine classification was introduced back in 1963 to categorise this quantity and the large selection in terms of quality.

Since then, the law has been amended and supplemented several times. The last amendment was made in 2010 with the definition of four basic categories, which also correspond to the latest European Union wine regulation (2008-09).

These basic categories function like a quality grading system that can be used as a guide. They regulate the origin, the cultivation methods and the type of vinification. The highest quality level is DOCG, followed by DOC wines (formerly DOP) and IGP or IGT. The lowest level are the general table wines (Vini Generici or also called Vini da tavola).
