Early harvest olive oil from Greece I extra virgin Koroneiki olive oil

This Greek extra virgin olive oil (Koroneiki) is something very special. The so-called Early Harvest olive oil from Greece is the green gold of the very first harvest of the respective season, obtained from still green and therefore unripe olives. Normally, the olives for the liquid gold are harvested between the end of October and sometimes January (this of course depends on the olive variety, the region and the climatic conditions). However, the harvest for Early Harvest starts much earlier, before the green olives change colour from dark purple to black-brown.

The olives are particularly rich in nutrients when they are still green. However, the yield of olive oil is significantly lower than with ripe olives that are harvested later. This makes the olive oil from the early harvest a particularly exclusive rarity. The olive oil also tastes special. The early harvest makes it particularly intense and fresh. At the same time, the olive oil from the early harvest is characterised by a strong and fruity note with a slightly peppery spiciness.

What makes early harvest olive oil so special?

The olives for this native olive oil extra from the Koroneiki variety are harvested very early. In other words, the olives are unripe and therefore still green and not yet purple or brown. However, unripe olives produce significantly less olive oil and the resulting lower yield is not attractive for many olive farmers. But the olive oil is special in many ways.

✔ High polyphenol content – olive oil from the early harvest has many polyphenolic compounds. Polyphenols are natural antioxidants.
✔ Intense, fresh flavour – the olive oil has a strong, fruity note with a slight peppery spiciness and a pleasant bitterness.
Limited production – Since the harvest takes place early in the season, the yield of oil is significantly lower than with olives harvested later. This makes Early Harvest olive oil a particularly exclusive rarity.
