The wonderfully traditional Chianti bottle wrapped in real raffia is simply too beautiful to be left to the tourist shops and its surely often dubious contents. The characteristic bulbous bottle, also known as a ‘fiasco’, gives the famous Chianti wine an unmistakable aura. The term ‘fiasco’ comes from the Italian and literally means ‘bulbous bottle’. This traditional raffia bottle, whose origins date back to the late Middle Ages, was created from the further development of ancient clay barrels.
Originally, the straw wrapping of the fiasco served a practical purpose: to protect the thin-walled glass of the bottle from damage caused by knocks. This was particularly important at a time when glassblowing and bottle technology were not yet as advanced as they are today.
The fiasco became a characteristic symbol of Chianti wines from the picturesque region of Tuscany. The bulbous shape of the bottle not only lends a touch of rustic elegance, but also helps to emphasise the authenticity and tradition of Chianti wine.
Here you will find the best San Michele Chianti in the traditional raffia bottle. The Chianti from Fattoria San Michele a Torri is a blend of 100% organic Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino grapes. The Chianti is wonderfully dense. The ruby red colour of the organic Chianti seduces the eye and promises a taste experience in a class of its own. As soon as this Italian red wine flows into the glass, a fascinating complexity of flavours unfolds. The nuances of ripe sour cherries and delicate violets take the senses on an aromatic journey. But that's not all - the gentle hint of tobacco, which is due to the ageing in wooden barrels, gives this red wine an additional dimension of flavour and sophistication. A truly elegant and appealing wine experience that reveals every facet of Italy's rich wine tradition.
The Florentine Paolo Nocentini fulfilled a dream when he bought the old Fattoria San Michele. Within a few years, it had become a model Tuscan farm: the old villa had been renovated in keeping with its style and the fields were once again cultivated with traditional crops. The small bakery bakes traditional bread from durum wheat. An impressive herd of Cinta Senese pigs graze not far from the fattoria and provide lardo, finocchiona and prosciutto. In the attic, grapes for vin santo are dried on wooden racks in the classic vinsantaia and then mature in the old-fashioned-looking caratelli made of chestnut wood and sealed with cement.
The grape reception and the fermentation tanks, on the other hand, are state-of-the-art
oenological technology. The winery is located on the border between Chianti Classico and Colli Fiorentini and can therefore produce wines from both areas.
Paolo Nocentini's ideal wine: the traditional Chianti as a pleasant drinking and table wine. It is therefore also available in the fiasco, the traditional raffia bottle. The Sangiovese vines are grown in a nursery from the vines of an 80-year-old vineyard, because Paolo is certain that they are better than the modern clones (and he is probably right). However, the yield is correspondingly low. The empathetic farm manager and oenologist Leonardo Francalanci manages the tightrope walk between welcome modernity and tradition worth preserving with almost somnambulistic certainty!
